transformation of landscapes and lifestyles caused by climate change and water politics in Southeastern Anatolia. Water is a scarce ressource in Southeastern Turkey. The Syrian Desert pushes north towards the Anatolian Steppe, threatening the delicate ecosystem with desertification. Since nearly 50 years the Turkish state tries do develop these rebellious Kurdish provinces by building dams and water supplies in the region. The economy in cities like Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa seems to benefit from these measures, while people in small towns often tell a different story- Hasankeyf, an 8000-year old town will vanish in the floods of the reservoir of the Ilisu Dam; distant settlements like Yuvacali suffer from drought because small rivers dried out after the completion of the Ataturk Dam. Also the landscape changes- once characterized by dry agriculture, many farmers now use artificial irrigation to water their crops.
